When Michael was born we did not know he would have clubfoot. He has severe bi-lateral clubfoot. At his 2 weeks old he got his 1st set of casts. He was casted for 16 weeks by a non-Ponseti doctor (new casts every week) with minor success. He then wore AFO's for 5 months waiting for his feet to grow for extensive surgery. As the date of surgery approached I started searching the web and found out about Dr. Ponseti. I emailed him with Michael's info and he called me. He said at 10 months old he needed to treat him right away and that he thought he could correct his feet without surgery. We left the next day. Dr. P casted him for 7 weeks (once a week) and then did the Tenotomy on his Achilles. He was casted once more for 3 weeks while it healed. He was fitted with the DDB bar upon the cast removal and has had it for 1 1/2 weeks. He is to wear it full time for 3 months and then we will see Dr.P again. He thinks after the 3 months he will be able to wear it at naptime and bedtime for 3 years. He is adjusting very well. He actually went up 4 stairs!! His poor little knees are rug burned and bruised. We found some children's small elbow pads and put extra padding in them. They have helped a lot! He will actuallycrawl straight legged!! He is also standing in them holding on to something. He actually only had 1 night where he had trouble sleeping and that was the 6th night. |
